A Starlit Journey - 2023-24 Guild Mystery Quilt Challenge
A “Starlit Journey” will take you across the seas, using only the stars to help you navigate. The ‘nautical chart” that you will use to create a lap size quilt will consist of six, 12-inch blocks.
Fabric requirements will be given for the entire quilt. Each block can be made up of a medium and a dark colour with a light background colour. You can use the same colours throughout each block; or you can make each block completely scrappy; or each block can be in different colours using the same background or in different background colours.
The Starlit Journey has been planned to suit all stages of quilting expertise. The blocks start out as more beginner friendly and progress to more advanced work. Each block with have detailed instructions and as the work becomes more advanced, demos to highlight techniques will be given. The mystery planners will also give suggested layout patterns for completing your masterpiece if you wish to use them.
Some of the “navigational” techniques that will be used are how to make flying geese, pinwheels, half square triangles, quarter square triangles, paper piecing, using templates in a square, and the stitch and flip method.
Once the final blocks and finishing instructions are given in April, we hope that participants will display their finished quilts at our end of the year program in June.
Please share your journey and post a picture of your completed block on the Saskatoon Quilt Guild's private page on Facebook. There is a featured posting "Are you doing our Starlit Mystery Quilt?" You can add a picture of your quilt blocks in the comments.
